Nick Fury- Changing Of The Guard - Niel Jacoby

1 - 1994. Classic Nick Fury, the one David Hasselhoff played in that TV movie, has grown old. He's sitting in his office in SHIELD HQ, tired after a long day of work. The trophies of his old adventures are on his walls and desk, gathering dust. There's a G-man standing in front of the desk. We can't see his face, but his body language is comfortable. He's not cowed by the legend of Nick Fury.

G-Man: I'm glad you're taking this well. The guys back at State warned me about old soldiers, said they don't respond well to being asked-

Nick: To turn in the gun and badge? Yeah. I've had to decommission a few antiques myself.

2 - The G-Man is waving off Nick's comment about turning in the gun and badge as he(the G-Man) starts boxing up Nick's old war trophies. We see his face, and it's a young Phil Coulson. We see Fury in profile. He's not sad, or angry, just tired.

Coulson: You can keep the gun and badge, we've got more guns than we know what to do with, and you'll need the badge to use the SHIELD gym. Keep in shape during your retirement. Hit the sauna, play some squash, canasta, whatever you old folks do.

Nick: Canasta?

3 - The New Nick Fury leans on the doorframe as Coulson keeps boxing up Nick's memorabilia. New Nick is the Sam Jackson Fury we know from the movies, though not yet bald. Think Pulp Fiction, but after a visit to the barber. New Nick is crossing his arms, just as comfortable as Coulson in this office. Fury is still at his desk, and has started pouring himself a couple fingers of good whiskey.

New Nick: Yeah. That's a thing retirees do, I think. Oh, how rude of me. Hi, Nick, I'm Nick.

Old Nick: Canasta's a card game. Who plays cards in a gym?

4 - New Nick takes the tumbler of whiskey off Old Nick's desk and drinks it himself. Coulson has finished packing up Old Nick's desk, and is taping up the last box.

Coulson: Who cares where they play?

Old Nick: It doesn't matter, I'm just saying, wh-

Coulson(Interrupting): There. Now get your crap out of my office.

Old Nick: Your office? I thought he...

5 - Close on New Nick's hand as he pulls out a postcard-sized blueprint of the SHIELD Helicarrier,

New Nick(Off Panel): The job just can't be done from an office this size anymore. We're phasing out all the old relics. Phil here is manning Ground Control, while I man the mobile base. An aircraft carrier the size of a medium-size city. Tacoma, for instance.

6 - Old Nick carries the last of his boxes out of his office. We can see Phil and New Nick sharing whiskey over Old Nick's shoulder. Old Nick is still tired, but now he's a bit heartbroken, too.

Caption(Old Nick): They used to say old soldiers never die. But I guess the world moves too fast to let us fade away these days.

Why Thoughtballoons? - Niel Jacoby

When Grant asked me about participating in Thoughtballoons' fifth anniversary, the hardest part was this. Talking about what Thoughtballoons meant to me. It involves a whole lot of talking about myself, and I've never been good at that. But there is one thing Thoughtballoons taught me: just how desperate I can get when I'm getting near a deadline. I can't count the pages that I half assed by throwing together a half-baked crossover and calling it a night. And that's it, really. Thoughtballoons is something I did, that I'm glad I did, but that I don't do anymore.

Sorry if you expected more after a week of nostalgic retrospectives.

Guardians Of The Galaxy - Q Fast Q Furious - Niel Jacoby

Full Splash: We see Q of the Q in the Guardians Of The Galaxy's home base, Knowhere. The team is shocked to see this unknown interloper, while Rocket is shooting a laser rifle at him. Q is unimpressed, as we can see the lasers have gone, and are going, straight through him. Q has tried to blend in sartorially with the rest of the crew, leading to a garish outfit that mixes every outfit on the ship, including Groot's.

Q: Are you quite done? Because if you don't think something as miniscule as the future of this entire galaxy is more important than a little target practice for your pet here, I can find some other group of outlaws to help out.

Star-Lord: ...I'm listening. And stop it, Rocket.

Rocket: I don't wanna!

Panel 1: Wide shot of a large desert, with a H.A.M.M.E.R. rover driving toward a large crater. The crater has been there for a while.

Cap: INITIATIVE FILE: KOMODO

LAST KNOWN LOCATION: MOJAVE DESERT--THOUGHT MISSING AFTER A.I.M. CHEMICAL BOMBARDMENT 3 MONTHS AGO

Panel 2: Commander Hill and a lackey are walking into a sizable cave-like formation in the crater.

Hill: WHAT'S THE THEORY, SOLDIER? NERVE POISON? ANTIDOTE TO THE LIZARD FORMULA? SOME NEW PATHOGEN THAT TURNS YOUR LUNGS TO SAND AND YOUR BLOOD TO GLASS?

Lackey: WELL, MA'AM, IT'S-

Panel 3: Hill and the lackey are just outside a darkened corridor in the formation, with what, from this distance, looks to be a vine coming out of it.

Hill: IT'S A VITAL MEMBER OF OUR INITIATIVE FORCES, SOLDIER!

Lackey: NO, NO, MA'AM. IT'S JUST BEEN INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT THE LOCATION, AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT WE HAD TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT THE BOMBARDMENT WAS.

Hill: AND? I DON'T JUST ASK YOU TO TELL ME ABOUT THE PROCCESS, I EXPECT RESU-

Panel 4: Hill is staring, shocked, into the corridor in the rock. The lackey is distressed, but not surprised.

Lackey: THE RESULT KIND OF SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. THE A.I.M. BOMBARDMENT HAD A PAYLOAD OF LIZARD FORMULA--

Panel 5: Wide shot of what's in the corridor: Komodo, who is incredibly gaunt due to being stuck in the desert for weeks, and covered in extra, budded limbs, growing from all over her body.

Lackey: --AN OVERDOSE.

Panel 1: The Warriors 3 are getting out of a rather small car, a VW Beetle or something, small enough that Volstagg is straining to pop himself out of the driver's seat area, in a parking lot.

Caption: EASTON, PA

Fandral: WHEN YOU PROPOSED A ROAD TRIP, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN TO ASK WHERE TO.

Hogun: THIS HAD BETTER BE WORTH IT, VOLSTAGG.

Staffer: YOU-YOU'RE JUST IN LUCK, SIR. WE'VE GOT JUST 3 LEFT!

Panel 3: Volstagg, Hogun, and Fandral are sitting in their front row seats. Volstagg's folding chair is obviously straining to support him, and he is loaded down with a bevy of snacks. In the ring, we can see The Faces Of Pain(The BarbarianMeng and The Warlord) and Team ROH(Nick Jackson, Matt Jackson, and Mike Bennett) facing off for their first round match. Hogun is clearly disinterested in the action, while Fandral is eyeing Maria, Mike Bennett's valet.

Hogun: FRANKLY, VOLSTAGG, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU THOUGHT WE-

Panel 4: In the ring, Nick and Matt Jackson simultaneously superkick The Warlord, and we can see Hogun react in astonishment in the crowd.

SFX: SMAK!

Panel 5: Hogun is standing up, in a rage, as Fandral continues eyeing Maria. Volstagg is startled, but continues eating.

Hogun: THAT IS NOT HOW WARRIORS CONDUCT THEMSELVES! BOOOOOO! BOOOOOO! HISS AND BOOOOOO, GOOD SIR!

Fandral: IS THAT AN ILLEGAL FOREIGN OBJECT IN YOUR PANTS, FINE MAIDEN, OR ARE YOU SIMPLY THAT ENJOYED TO SEE MY BEAUTIFUL VISAGE?

(P.S. sorry this one went up a little late, I've been kind of busy as of late)

Panel 1: In normal Moose Kid artstyle, the WIZARD COUNCIL is plotting. One is irritated, the second is sullen, and the third is jumping about holding his hand up like he's trying to get the teacher's attention.

Wizard 1: NO MATTER WHAT WE DO, WHAT WE TRY, THAT MOOSE KID IS STILL HAPPY AS A CLAM!

Wizard 2: I KNEW WE SHOULDN'T HAVE PUT HIM INTO A COMIC!

Wizard 2: INGENIOUS!

Wizard 3: TOLD YA!

Panel 3: MOOSE KID has found himself in the middle of a gigantic superhero battle. He's still in his normal Moose Kid artstyle, but the rest is in a Jim Lee-esque, stereotypically modern DC artstyle. Tens of heroes with overbusy, dark costumes and permanent scowls are ripping each other's arms off and batting each other with them. The air is dense with caption boxes:

*MY PARENTS ARE DE-
*PUNISHMENT TIME! ALL THE CRIMINAL SCU-
*THE WORLD IS A VAMPIRE, OUT TO DRA-
*-ND HEAVEN KNOWS I'M MISERABLE NOW

and so on and so forth.
